opening
Opening is an expressive artwork about connecting, and the ways we control access, internally and socially. The door is a powerful metaphor for me—especially after my recent craniotomy to remove a large (benign) tumor, in which the surgeon described the procedure as “cutting a door” in my skull.
That door became a symbol of opening to healing, of accessing my inner world, and of the liminal transitional space between different parts of oneself, different phases of life, different possibilities and choices, and the connecting threshold between people. As I expanded and amplified this symbol, it became about systems of control and access, exclusion and inclusion in our society and social networks.
When we open doors, we invite possibility, learning, and imagination.
“When we open doors, we invite possibility, learning, and imagination.”
The open door flaps its wings— door and unknown—and flies into an even deeper and expansive opening in the system itself.
Opening was created by manipulating and layering my own images of a door, sky, and paint textures using Adobe Photoshop.
